Whale Beach, Sydney

Whale Beach

I have a friend who swears that Whale Beach is her favourite beach in Sydney. I can see why. It’s one of those long long beaches with sand for days and long shoreline. It’s quieter than the other big beaches so it’s really a nice space to be on a hot summer day.

I think that it’s a lot like Bilgola Beach but with a bit more because of the grass that runs parallel to the beach and the playground.

Sydney's Whale Beach is beautiful and generally pretty empty. It is so underrated but its the type of beach you want to live on.

Where is Whale Beach

Location

Whale Beach is the second most Northern of the Northern Beaches, only Palm Beach is further North. If you’re heading east off Barenjoey Road you want to aim for Whale Beach Road then Surf Road which takes you down the hill and onto The Strand.

Address

I have no idea why by Google Maps seems to think the address for Whale Beach Reserve is 4 Malo Rd. This does not seem right.

I would use the address 24 The Strand, Whale Beach, 2107.

Parking

There is metered parking all along the beach and its generally pretty empty so you should find a spot.

However, with a Northern Beaches Parking Permit you don’t need to pay.

Features of Whale Beach

The Beach Itself

Whale Beach has seemingly got miles of sand and surf. In actual fact the beach is 600m long. The sand is such a rich colour it’s stunning!

It’s a very open beach without much cover from tides, waves and rips so do be careful when swimming. The beach is patrolled on the weekends in the summer season.

It’s best to visit Whale Beach when there is little wind as there is very little cover.

Whale Beach also has a surf break called the Wedge which is at the north end of the beach, just off the rocks. Apparently the break is best with North Easterly winds.

Rock Pool

There is a rock pool at the far South End of the pool but if the waves are pumping it can easily get washed over completely.

Playground

There is a little playground set in the grassy area above the beach. It’s a tiny structure combined with a swing set. The structure while little is very cool. It has some really clever contraptions where the kids can use pullies to get sand off the ground and bring it up to where you are playing then you can tip the sand through holes and funnels in the floor of the structure. My kids spent ages playing there.

Whale Beach Facilities

Picnic and BBQs

There are a BBQs set along the beach. There is also plenty of space for picnics and even raised picnic tables / benches.

Bathrooms

There are bathrooms down near the rock pool at the south end of  the beach. I seem to think there is a shower down that end but I could be wrong. Anyone able to clarify that for me would be a great help!

Food close by

If you’re after a coffee or a quick bite to eat there is a little place opposite the beach, on the corner of The Strand and Surf Road.

The other option is to head back up the hill to Whale Beach Deli or Moby Dicks, Whale Beach.
